Today is nomination day for the Sibu P212 by election.

Nomination is closed and three candidates were accepted in the fight for the Parliamentary seat of Sibu P212.

The candidates:

Pakatan Rakyat/DAP - Wong Ho Leng

BN/SUPP - Robert Lau Hui Yew

Independent - Narawi Haron

By looking at the 2008 general election results, PR/DAP will be the underdog in this 11th by election and has a very steep hill to climb.

The seat has some 54,695 registered voters (an increase of 1016 new voters) with 36,389 Chinese (66.5 percent), 12,050 Ibans (22 percent), 5,740 Malays (10.5 percent) and 516 others (1 percent)

Without saying out loud, its in the heart of BN/Supp leaders that the win is theirs but by what majority. The best PR/DAP can do is to bring down the majority of 3235 which BN/Supp won in 2008.

BN/Supp is confident retaining majority of the Iban and Malay voters while the Chinese votes are split 55% for BN/Supp and 45% PR/DAP.

Voters turn out in the 2008 general election was 67% out of 53679 registered voters. The turnout this round may touch the 70% mark.

In order for PR/DAP to win, even by a slim majority, their target should be on the Ibans. Following the Peninsular Chinese voting patterns, PR/DAP may reverse the 2008 support to 55% for PR/DAP and 45% BN/Supp.

Confident BN/Supp will not sit on their laurel but will continue to bribe their way through for a bigger majority.
