By Lim Guan Eng Chief Minister Of Penang

Pakatan Rakyat Penang’s greatest legacy to Malaysia and greatest threat to BN’s stranglehold on power is to prove that the right policies can make Malays compete and succeed against the best in the world. Ever since the Pakatan Rakyat Penang state government took power in March 2008, we have made integrity and CAT governance(Competency, Accountability and Transparency) the hallmark of financial administration.

New measures implemented includes competitive and public open tender, payments directly to recipients without going through middle-men, priority given to Penang contractors, e-tender through the internet and a 2 week objection period to ensure that successful contractor no longer need “political cables” but “computer cables”. There is no doubt that competitive open tenders saves costs and improve quality.

Many contractors have been liberated with the implementation of open tenders at all levels. For Class F contractors which is only open to bumis, open tender system has allowed non-UMNO linked contractors in Penang to get contracts for the first time. In the past contracts are usually reserved for UMNO cronies and those outside the state. Clearly the competitive open tender system of PR is more transparent, accountable and beneficial to the people compared to the negotiated tender system for BN cronies.

What is more surprising is the outcome of the open tender system open to all races. Instead of perception that Malays cannot compete and that the non-Malay contractor would win all open tender contracts, this is not true. Since the new PR government took over, Penang Development Corporation(PDC) had issued 23 tender awards, of which 7(30%) were won by non-Malay contractors and 16(70%) won by Malay contractors. Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang(PBAPP) had issued 66 tender awards of which 22(33%) were won by non-Malay contractors as compared to 44(67%) by Malay contractors.

The performance by Malay contractors in an open tender system with non-Malays proves that Malay contractors can compete with others and win tender awards on their own merit. Clearly it is not the race that is an issue but failed policies that encourage dependency especially when it helps BN maintain the status quo and its grip on power.

A good example is China which suffered famine and severe economic distress with wrong policies of eating from ‘a single iron pot” no matter how hard or little one worked. However when China opened up its economy and allow one’s hard work and ability to determine one’s success and rewards, China transformed itself from being the “Sick Man of Asia” in the 1960s into the second largest world economy by 2011.

BN had instituted policies that stifles initiative, creativity, hard work, drive and productivity which benefited only the few BN cronies at the expense of entire country. For instance, a 30% quota of publicly listed shares were reserved for Malays but only a few benefited as many ordinary Malays never received shares from the Federal government.

The state government regrets that there are now certain elements within Pakatan Rakyat Penang that is aligned with BN in opposing efforts to implement an open tender system and CAT governance. We must remain steadfast as we are backed by results. The Penang state government has been able to turn a projected deficit of RM 35 million in 2008 budget to a record surplus of RM 88 million.

A projected deficit of RM 40 million in 2009 Budget has been turned around to record a surplus of RM 77 million. In fact the 2009 budget surplus would have been a record RM 92 million were it not for the payment of RM 14.7 million as a result of the Tang Hak Ju land scam of the previous administration.

Penang is proud to be the first state to hold public open tenders of government projects and procurement contracts and also conducting it through the internet(e-tender). By sticking to CAT principles, Penang is the first state or federal government in Malaysia to gain praise from Transparency International.

In politics, we want more friends than foes. But we are willing to lose friends and gain foes if we can change the mindset of the people by providing equal opportunity, be confident, self-reliant and attain international benchmarks. Pakatan Rakyat Penang’s greatest legacy to Malaysia and greatest threat to BN’s stranglehold on power is to prove that the right policies can make Malays and Malaysians compete and succeed against the best.

The brewing storm of hate among the people is getting uglier by the day. Using religion and the race card once again to force the people to surrender their democratic rights and beholden to the power that be.

To start a fire is easy but when it burns out of control it will cause heavy damages. This may be what some evil people have in mind but we must remain calm in this brewing storm of hate in order that we can help to stop this fire from spreading. We will fight back with our calmness and patience.

Basing on the argument from an ex-leader of a small country in South East Asia "that the 911 attacks in the United States that killed nearly 3,000 was staged as an excuse to mount attacks on the Muslim world" leads me back to history on the Pearl Harbor attacks.

It looks like the US leaders are itching to start a war and they have to go to the extend of staging attacks and kill their own people on their own soil to justify it. The ex-leader of that small country in South East Asia cited that the US is capable of staging such attacks.

I am now awaken to the "conspiracy theory of the 911 terrorist attacks" by the ex-leader of that small country in South East Asia. My imagination brought me to think that the US was eager to test their first atomic bomb which had not being used before. Since the Japanese were enroute to take control of nearly all the countries in South East Asia, what a better way to start testing the atomic bombs against the Japanese but the US must first find a reason to do so.

The US than planned and staged the attack and bomb their own navy post at Pearl Harbor blaming it on the Japanese. This is a very valid reason for the US to use the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So, Was The Attacks & Bombing Of Pearl Harbor Staged As Well?

This is my confusing thought on Najib's "1Malaysia"
"To confuse you in order to take control over your body and mind, justified my implementing confusing policies irrespective of the end results as long as it serves my needs and purposes" Richard Loh

Each time when a new PM takes over, the people have high hopes and the believe that the country will change for the better. Great slogans, great plans and great talks fill the air as each PM sits on the throne. As usual it does not take long for these great euphoria to come tumbling down just as fast as it was created.

The first report from the Human Rights Watch released its World Report 2010.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — Malaysia has failed to undertake systematic reforms to fulfil Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s oath of office in April 2009 promising to respect “the fundamental rights of the people,” Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2010.

The 612-page report, the New York-based organisation’s 20th annual review of human rights practices around the globe, summarises major human rights trends in more than 90 nations and territories worldwide.

In Malaysia, the report said, instead of addressing persistent human rights problems, the government harasses the political opposition; improperly restricts the rights to peaceful expression, association, and assembly; and mistreats migrants.

“The Malaysian government appears to be more interested in pursuing short-term political advantage than safeguarding rights,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

“In the hopes of maintaining control and power, the government has turned its back on its promises to protect people’s rights.”

The report also lamented that human rights defenders — such as lawyers, journalists, and members of non-governmental organisations — faced continued harassment and the possibility of arrest, especially if the government considered their work to be connected to opposition political parties.

“During the early days of his government, Prime Minister Najib talked big on protecting human rights — but talk is cheap,” Robertson said. “If the government really believes in its 1 Malaysia campaign, then it should demonstrate real commitment to improving respect for the human rights of all Malaysians.”

Am I confused, are you confused, anyone confused at all?

Since the introducing of "1Malaysia" about 10 months ago, what we see is more confusion of exactly what "1Malaysia" entails. We see 1camp, 1toilet, 1clinic and many 1's mushrooming and yet we cannot comprehend the real gist of it. Instead of uniting all Malaysians under the pretext of "1Malaysia", now it looks more likely to divide the people further. When all else fails, religion is the best weapon. Is this part of the "1Malaysia" details?

Following the rhetoric of "1Malaysia" comes the "People First Performance Now" slogan and that complicates the already confusing minds of the people. What a surprise for the "People First" with the continuing price increase of consumer goods, expecting price hikes for tolls, petrol, utilities, transportation and worst of all the GST. Ain't these confusing?

Not to be left behind the confusion is the "Performance Now". Each and every institution is trying to shine in the "Performance Now" category. The best of the best is the pdrm, not enough police to protect the places of worship but sufficient to hunt down the oppositions for any slight misdirection, whether intentionally or unintentionally does not matter, all they want is to see that charges are brought against them. While real crimes are being committed by criminals and certain high profiles aligned to the ruling party, their performances to take actions are from slow to inactive. Getting more confused now?

To top off the confusion is the "1World" leaders blindly conferring awards on our leader without any second thought about merits, performances, justification or quality of leadership.

I had advised the PM before and since he kept asking for suggestions from the public and that he listens, I am advising him one more time.

Stop all the rhetoric and slogans of "1Malaysia, People First Performance Now", which are not only confusing you but the people as well, and get down to the real work of a true leader with honesty, integrity, fairness and without fear or favor.

Stop being a politician and start acting like a Prime Minister of a country and for the people. There will definitely be confusion on your part if you continue to behave like a politician while trying to be a PM that has to implement policies that affect the people and country.

Will Umno Najib stop giving out the goodies once they get back their two third majority in Parliament and return back to their old arrogant, corrupt and racist way of ruling?
THINK ABOUT IT CAREFULLY. My advise is that to get the goodies flowing we must keep on voting against Umno/BN.

Do we need to be thankful or grateful to Umno Najib for giving out the country's wealth to the people and pleasing the non malays by opening selective opportunity doors in certain section of the educations, GLC and civil services yet the quota system still in place? Why is it only now that these are carried out?

I do not see anyone asking these questions nor the so call intellectual journalists put forward such questions to Najib or write about it.

Maybe a lot of you know the answers but wanted to remain in the silent mode. By remaining silent will it help to push Umno Najib to give out even more which by right belongs to the people.

308 had provided us a catalyst to expedite a solution that this country needed. We must be part of the solution in order for it to be effective.

First of all we need not be thankful or grateful to Umno Najib for giving out all that he has being giving out lately, which belongs to the country and its people anyway.

For over 50 years Umno is untouchable and they thought so, that they can be untouchable forever, hence their arrogant, racist and corrupt way of leading this country. They keep most of the valuables to themselves and give out their unwanted crumbs to the people.

The results of 308 had shrunk their balls and put fear into them and make them realised that the people of Malaysia are not that stupid anymore. Using the fear tactic and racial divide seems not to be working anymore. (But it looks like they are trying to use religion now, we can just hope and pray that they will not succeed)

They know that to remain in power they have to give out a little more of what belongs to the rakyat. They have to be satisfied of getting a little less for themselves in order to fool the rakyat in enhancing their power comes the next GE.

Is Umno Najib sincere in sharing the country's wealth with the people and keep on doing so? The fear in them of losing power is for real and Umno Najib knows he needs to do what he has to do, but is it enough or is he just fishing for votes.

In order to ensure that he continues to share the country's wealth with the people equally, we need to keep voting against umno/bn until the day that we see that equality and meritocracy reign and only people with integrity, honesty are voted in to run this country.

We can TAME Umno/bn with the POWER of our VOTE.

Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdull, 49, has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and told reporters that he would be focusing on high profile cases as well as those that had gained public interest. Read my posting here.

True to his word he now takes action on a "High Profile" corruption case:

(New Straits Times ) - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has directed its officers to gather more evidence into an allegation of abuse of power by the Kelantan Menteri Besar Incorporated (PMBK) over a purchase of six cakes valued about RM3,900.

Wait a minute, did I see or read something wrong here, RM3,900 worth of cakes, a "High Profile" corruption case?

Maybe we misinterpreted what he meant by "High Profile", he may meant it to be "High Profile Political Personality" and the MB of Kelantan is really a High Profile Politician.

What about the x-MB multi million ringgit corruption charges? He is no longer in the league of the "High Profile" because he no longer is the MB.

OK, what about the High Profile cases involving the sub sub something 500 million ringgit commission, PKFZ or the illegal transfer of money overseas?

They are also not in the league of "High Profile" but belongs to the "High High Profile" status which cannot be touched.

In Malaysia Boleh, we need to really understand each and every word what our leaders are talking about. From 1Malaysia, KPI to NKRA, many are still scratching their heads to its meaning. So far nothing has yet to come out from all these so call action plans. Whatever it is, no full explanation is given and they are just happy about it to let the people speculate and define them on their own.

Can we expect more problems and troubles with this "Allah" issue? Only the two cousins can provide us the answers. For decades this is a non issue until the Home Ministry decided to ban non-muslim from using it. For whatever reason, the Home Ministry must come out with an explanation why they did it.

I will leave this "Allah" issue alone for now and hope that the leaders can come to their senses and stop trying to impose any ruling at their whims and fancies without any concrete reason to do so. If it is for political mileage, then they should immediately stop all these nonsense, for the people are no longer so easily blinded to accept what is thrown at them.

It Happened Under Your Watch, Najib!
M. Bakri Musa

“Don’t point the fingers at UMNO or anyone else,” so declared an angry Najib Razak, responding to a question on last Friday’s bombing of a church. It was pathetic to see him react thus, a body language that bespoke of a sinister kid whose bag of malicious tricks finally exploded in his face.

Najib would like us to believe that those acts of arson were spontaneous combustion. What a pathetic attempt at extricating himself from the ugly and dangerous mess he helped create! His performance was more to convince himself, for he could not possibly convince us.

Here he was after pouring the gasoline feigning surprise when someone finally lit a match. It was Najib who only the day before the incident declared that “Muslim groups were free to protest and express their views about the ‘Allah’ issue.” Just in case that message did not register, he added that the authorities would not stop groups from gathering at mosques and protesting there. Najib’s cousin and Home Minister, Hishammuddin, echoed the same sentiments.

Obviously somebody took them at their words. It is truly touching to see these two ministers belatedly becoming so protective of citizens’ rights to protest! The pair obviously do not appreciate the subtle but enormous difference between having those rights and the wisdom to exercise them appropriately.

Najib and Hishammuddin must think that Malaysians are a dumb lot not to see through their charade. It was Hishammuddin who first unhinged that dangerous religious wrecking ball with his banning of the use of the word Allah by that Catholic publication.

Contrast the words and deeds of these two very public purveyors of the “1Malaysia” fantasy to that of the leaders of Pakatan. In a statement issued through PKR, Anwar Ibrahim declared that “the wish of the non-Muslim community to use the term ‘Allah’ is a positive and welcomed development. We must not let that be an opportunity for those with malicious intent to seize the occasion to portray themselves as champions of Islam.” Amen to that!

Anwar realized only too well the potential dangers of stoking the religious fire. To emphasize his point, Anwar called for restraint and urged his followers not to participate in the planned Friday demonstrations. It was a particularly prescient call. Anwar must have read Najib, Hishammuddin and all the other characters in UMNO well; he knew their mischievous if not evil intent.

Anwar was not alone; leaders of PAS went out of their way not only to discourage the demonstrations but also to defend the rights of the Catholic publication to use the term “Allah.”

I do not know whether Malaysians, specifically Malays, are becoming more sensible or the restraint urged on by Anwar and the others had an impact, for come Friday the demonstrations were definitely muted. The egging-on by UMNO leaders fell flat; instead the rotten eggs landed on the faces of UMNO leaders.

The exemplary stand of the opposition leaders was a stark contrast to the mischievous if not downright dangerous antics of UMNO leaders. The contrast did not end there. Immediately following the tragic incident, Selangor Pakatan Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim visited the charred church. His was a much needed and very comforting presence, as well as a deeply symbolic gesture. It was a spontaneous yet splendid demonstration of common sense and deep concern for your fellow citizens, as well as of leadership.

Najib was content to condemn the hooliganism from afar, and in the process found himself in an uncomfortably defensive position. He did not visit the damaged church until the next day, but not before he had launched his party’s People’s Champion campaign in preparation for the next elections. That was Najib’s priority.

The only UMNO leader who visited the damaged church right away was its Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin. He conveyed genuine empathy; his condemnation and expression of sympathy were genuine and heartfelt, a welcomed change from the hollowness of Najib’s.

Khairy’s presence made the absence of the other UMNO leaders that much more noticeable, and vulgar. These supposedly more seasoned UMNO leaders could learn a thing or two from Khairy on the importance of showing leadership in moments of crisis. You cannot teach that; either you have it or you don’t. Obviously Najib does not have it.

Najib’s bag of tricks was so crude that even foreign observers saw through it. “The real reason UMNO is politicizing the issue and pandering to its conservative base,” wrote the Wall Street Journal, “may be to deflect attention from its own political vulnerabilities.”

Najib had every reason to want to change the horrible headlines that were damaging his leadership, the latest being the jet engines stolen from a military base. The theft occurred during Najib’s tenure as Defense Minister but was only recently being made public.

That was not the only serious lapse of security during Najib’s tenure as Defense Minister. There was the spectacular and potentially devastating collapse of the naval base in Pularek just before its official opening. And to balance things out, there was the lethal attack on the army base in Grik, Perak, by a band of sarong-clad Al Maunah gang members. This recent revelation of the stolen jet engines was merely part of Najib’s trademark pattern of incompetence.

Thus far Najib is determined to repeat that same pattern as Prime Minister, except that he has now progressed beyond incompetence to being sinister.

It is downright malicious for Najib, Hishammuddin and others in UMNO to attempt at dividing Malaysians by needlessly treading on our religious sensitivities. Najib’s “1Malaysia” campaign has barely begun and he has already made a mockery of the ideal.

Specifically, Najib’s attempt to split Muslims in the opposition parties was brazen, crude and potentially destructive. There were initial intimations that his dirty scheming would work, what with the mainstream media continually harping on the supposed differences among the leaders of PAS and Keadilan over this issue. Najib and others must have been licking their chops, savoring the ‘brilliance’ of their strategy while remaining oblivious of the dangerous forces that they had unleashed.

Thankfully this time around Malaysians are far ahead of their leaders; we did not fall for this ugly and dangerous ploy. I am heartened that even UMNO’s own New Straits Times felt emboldened enough not to defend the administration on this matter.

In a thoughtful commentary, Rehman Rashid not too subtly reminded us of the terrible mess we found ourselves in with this manufactured crisis. Left unstated is the role of our leaders in leading us to be where we are today. Of course it would be too much to expect the mainstream media, specifically NST, to explore that. Under the circumstance, Rehman has gone as far as he could, and I applaud him for that.

In his piece Rehman wrote, “Debilitating dogmas need to be debunked, political parasites purged, and Little Napoleons stripped naked and hounded out of town.” Strong words! At least he has demonstrated that sycophantic editors (or at least their toadying editorials) are out too!

I hope that the positive gestures by Khairy and refreshingly candid commentary by Rehman would move Najib, Hishammuddin and others in UMNO away from their dangerous games. If they do not, then it is time we take the match away before they burn down the country. It is also time we tell them in no uncertain terms that they are not only unfit to lead our great nation but they also pose an imminent danger to Malaysia.

The nation suffered terribly in 1969; that national tragedy was instrumental in elevating Tun Razak to the nation’s top post. We should never risk our nation to another tragic episode under the inept and sinister leadership of his son.

We must not let Najib and his UMNO cahoots continue their bag of dirty tricks upon us. The fire next time might not be so easily contained. The conflagration then could rip us all apart. Let us not even contemplate giving them another chance; we have had enough!

PAS and Umno are always at loggerhead when they talk about Islam, trying to outdo one another as if they are having different God. For those of us who are non muslim Malaysians would really want to know who we can believe and trust to ensure that we will not be subjected to any Islamic laws. We have no choice, as religion is now being used as a weapon to gain support politically and we are faced with a tough decision which party to vote in constituencies having only PAS or umno to choose from.

The reactions from PAS and umno one day after the burning of Churches and the Mosque protest. Both parties are holding separate functions and I reproduce quotes from their party leaders as reported by The Malaysian Insider.

This is what Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Razak said:
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak claimed today the attack on three churches early yesterday would not affect his 1 Malaysia policy or ideas.

"Do not simply blame Umno when there is any problem, when churches were torched, fingers were pointed at Umno. We have condemned the attack," said Najib at the launch of the party's People's Champion programme.

He also said the party leaders and government are serious in handling the matter and want those responsible to be brought to justice.

"Just because one or two churches were attacked 1 Malaysia is said to be under threat. 1 Malaysia will not be in danger," said Najib

“What is important is the mainstream is on our side, you cannot judge based on the actions of one or two individual,” said Najib when asked on the report yesterday that a priest was manhandled by four men last night. Detail report here.

This is what PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said:
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang did not mince his words today when calling the Klang Valley church firebombings as “uncivilised” and against Islam.

“Why did they burn and attack the churches? Where did they learn this from?” Hadi asked while briefing PAS members on national issues at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) auditorium here.

“Islam respects the rights of other to practise their own religion, have their own places of worship, including churches.”

He added that this freedom extended even during the times of war between Muslims and non-Muslims.

“Even when Muslims lands were invaded, churches were protected,” he said, noting ironically that Friday’s attacks happened during a time of peace.

He called for a fair investigation to be carried out and for the culprits to be brought to justice according to the law.

Hadi said PAS was ready to dialogue and explain the issue to the people and urged the media to give it fair coverage for that purpose.

He said Malaysia should maintain its culture of tolerance, pointing out that non-Muslim shops exist peacefully in Malay kampungs.

He said the issue of the use of Allah can be solved with dialogue but said certain parties wanted to exploit the issue for political gain.

“PAS is not concern with gaining support or winning elections but about upholding the truth and what is right.” he said, adding that PAS would speak the truth even though it may be bitter.

Hadi hoped non-Muslims who were previously in the dark about PAS would now see the Islam which the party stood for. Detail report here.

Compare the two Presidents speeches and then take the poll at the top of the page.

These are the consequences when trying to outdo and outsmart one another in politics. Instead of good governance after winning to rule the federal government, power and greed rears it ugly head, trying to wrest control over the lost States and brandishing all kinds of slogans and talks. Even the law is no longer applicable for wanting to remain in power, trying to appease a certain group by allowing them to demonstrate even though the law does not permit it. High court decisions are thrown to the dogs with no respect whatsoever to the judges verdicts.

Today we see churches being fired bomb and leaders coming out to condemn it. Can we see that its a bit too late when in the first place a good and capable PM should not get involved in fanning racial and religious matters. He should be in control and put an immediate stop to it by not allowing anyone else to fan such dangerous issues.

Today we see not only Churches are torched but the PM "1Malaysia, People First Performance Now" burn to ashes as well. Najib must start to learn and learn fast that political parties is not the Government and Vice versa. Once in office his primary job is to look after the country and peoples welfare, irrespective of which political divide they are align to and not indulge any further in political fights. He must not use any of the institutions or Government apparatus for political reasons. If the PM can prove his worth and do what a PM should do, why the fear of losing in general elections unless what you are doing as a PM is not for the country or the rakyat but for your own political party.

Will these incidents happen if we have a capable PM?

Update: Instead of arresting the home minister or reprimand him for breaking the country's law, the PM had now broken the law himself.

"Najib backs right to protest ‘Allah’ judgment"

Where do we go from here when the country leaders themselves are breaking the laws and going against their own words?

The Law Is The Law

Gathering OF More Than 4 Is Illegal

Candle Light Vigil Is Illegal

Demonstration Is Illegal

Demonstration Is Not Our Culture

You Will Get The Full Brunt Of The Law IF You Disobey

How Can You Ever Trust The Umno Government For Breaking The Law Themselves And Going Against Their Own Words And Warning.

"Home Ministry To Allow Protests Against ‘Allah’ Ruling "

We Can Clearly See Two Different Sets Of Law Being Applied Depending On Which Side You Are With.

Happen to read a report at Free Malaysia Today and get a shock at how genius the new MACC chief can be.

Good leaders with integrity and fairness will know how to set priority to handle the many criminal cases. The ex-DG had proudly claimed that MACC will investigate corruption cases even if it is only one ringgit, and, I would agree with him in order to rid of corruptions in this country. But if there are corruption cases involving hundreds of million ringgit and high profile government officials, these cases must be more important than the few ringgit corruption cases. If top corrupt leaders are arrested and charged it will send a very good signal to the lower ranking officers not to be corrupted.

There is no need to provide reasons and excuses for ones failure to handle high-profile cases when you have set the wrong priority and are subservience to your political master. Having not enough officers to go after high-profile cases but sufficient officers to go after suspected two thousand ringgit corruption, suspected MB's cow and car, going through files after files of the Selangor state government office, hassling elected rep, filing police reports against Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand, speak volume of your seriousness of fighting corruptions.

If MACC’s newly anointed director-general Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed is serious in fighting corruptions he should talk less and set his priority to get all those involved in the PKFZ, fighter jet engines, Bala's revelations, ministers that are living beyond their means, previous MBs and political leaders owning huge properties, illegal transmission of money overseas and I guess there are more files of corrupted top leaders lock up somewhere. Use whatever is available to you and get cracking into these high-profile cases, stop whining, stop giving idiotic reasoning and excuses for your own failure.

One comment from FreeMalaysiaToday reader for director-general Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed to consider to make MACC more effective:
Anthony Says:
January 6th, 2010 at 10:28 am

To be effective, the MACC must be TOTALLY independant to investigate and to prosecute. Why depend on AG’s office. This itself brings its credibility into question. It must report to Parliament. The Advisory Board members must also be seen to be neutral and competent. There is no other way.

" MACC’s newly anointed director-general Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed:
Several hundred corruption and high profile cases have taken a back seat as MACC focuses on a slew of upcoming ones as 2010 begins....In justifying MACC’s delay in dealing with several public interest cases, he said it was not fair to put the entire blame on MACC.....“We have only 31 prosecutors seconded to us from the attorney-general’s office to assist MACC with prosecution. Our job is to carry out investigations and the prosecution is left to the A-Gs office,” he told viewers.
